Falling rain produces electrostatic charges when it hits a surface. Researchers have found a way to harness these charges to harvest an optimal amount of energy from raindrops. Hao Wu, now at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and her colleagues created an energy extractor that exploits a voltage difference between two surfaces: a Teflon-covered surface that has a permanent negative charge and, underneath it, a positively charged conducting layer.
