Infection Prevention and Control

Hand hygiene is the single most important measure to prevent transmission of infection and is the cornerstone of infection prevention and control (IPC). The original study in this field was conducted at a maternity hospital in Vienna, Austria, in 1847. This study demonstrated that the mortality rate among mothers was significantly lower when the HCWs cleaned their hands with an antiseptic agent.
