The Americanization of European Taste

At the time the first English immigrants arrived on the eastern seaboard of North America, the Indians who then occupied the country drank very little alcohol. In theory the colonists could have made their own beer. In England this was normally brewed from barley but it could also be made from other kinds of grain, including maize, which the Indians cultivated. As early as 1585, members of the first, abortive settlement managed to brew satisfactory beer from Indian maize.
