The Beginning of GPS History

When Russia launched their satellite Sputnik in 1957, the U.S. may have been disappointed, but the launch gave way to a major American invention: GPS. After Sputnik was launched, scientists at MIT made an interesting discovery: the radio signals produced by the satellite changed as the satellite moved closer or farther away. This information gave way to the idea that satellites could be tracked from the ground using their radio signals.
